Your shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint that typically allows stable movement in many directions. The labrum is composed of fibrocartilage and is situated around the shoulder socket, deepening the joint and greatly increasing joint stability.

Arthroscopic Shoulder Labral Repair

Labral tears may occur from sporting injuries, overuse injuries, or trauma such as a fall, direct blow, or a sudden pull. You may experience shoulder instability or possibly a shoulder dislocation if the labrum is torn or detached.

Diagnosing a labral tear may be difficult and may require one of the best Sports Medicine orthopedic surgeons Phoenix such as Sumit Dewanjee, MD.

Labral tears may be repaired with a shoulder arthroscopy. This is performed as an outpatient minimally invasive procedure, and should be performed by an experienced Arizona orthopedic surgeon who has done hundreds of shoulder arthroscopies such as FXRX shoulder surgeon Dr. Dewanjee.

Partial and Total Shoulder Replacement

When patients have severe arthritis or degenerative disease of the shoulder and nonoperative treatment fails, a total shoulder replacement with an Arizona orthopedic surgeon may help provide pain relief and improved shoulder function.

The surgery replaces the arthritic bone surfaces with a metal ball attached to a stem that goes into the upper arm. The metal ball fits into a plastic socket. The results of Total shoulder replacement surgery are typically excellent and it has become the standard of care for patients suffering from advanced osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint.

A newer type of shoulder replacement, called a Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement, switches the metal ball and socket. This type of surgery works better for patients with large rotator cuff tears who have “cuff tear arthropathy”. The FDA approved the surgery in 2003, and Dr. Dewanjee is a Phoenix orthopedic surgeon with special training and experience in Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement.

Partial shoulder replacement is a procedure for patients who have shoulder arthritis involving predominantly the ball side of the shoulder joint. This may come from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, severe fractures, or arthritis that develops after a fracture or dislocation of the shoulder.

Arthroscopic Shoulder Instability Repair

The shoulder joint allows an incredible range of motion for being a shallow ball-and-socket joint. The stability comes from the the rotator cuff muscles and cartilage structures around the joint. Shoulder instability occurs when these structures are either stretched, torn, or detached (such as a labral tear).

There are 3 types of instability – anterior, posterior, or multi-directional instability (MDI). If conservative treatment including rehabilitation fails, an instability repair may be performed. Otherwise, the patient may have recurrent dislocations or subluxations (partial dislocations) of the shoulder.

Arthroscopic Shoulder Instability Repair

Arthroscopic Shoulder Instability Repair Shoulder instability procedures may include a Bankart Repair, an arthroscopic capsular shift, or an arthroscopic shoulder surgery stabilization. These arthroscopic shoulder procedures should be performed by an Arizona orthopedic surgeon with special shoulder training such as FXRX’s Sumit Dewanjee, MD.
